How to read this

Seen from above: grass, bare ground, lakes, plants, rock. No gravity: plants sprout by the water and spread over grass. Bright tinted cells are living bodies; white ones are loose life that withers back into plants.
A body is 24 or more touching life cells. It has energy: living costs some, eating plants brings some, growing spends some. At zero it starves, cell by cell. It splits past 90 cells; two touching bodies fuse only if both accept.
A mind: only the 8 biggest bodies think. Each is born with an inherited nature (curiosity, greed, sociability, caution) that drifts a little at every split, and keeps a story: who it says it is, and what happened to it. It can walk, rewrite its own cells' rules, speak to nearby bodies, give them energy, and accept or refuse fusion. Nobody tells it what to do.
Watch: a pulsing outline means that body is thinking right now; its thought then appears in a bubble. Every change is told in plain words in What's happening. Click a line to select that body.
Why it is slow: Slow shows one thought at a time, about every 8 s. Only thoughts from a real model cost money; the physics is free. Use Pause / Normal / Fast to change pace.
